This striking landmark towering above Stráž pod Ralskem in the Liberec Region originally served as a Gothic castle before it acquired its present Renaissance appearance. Historical sources often refer to this noble seat simply as Stráž, which directly points to the original German expression "Warte auf dem Berg," meaning watch on the mountain. Over time, this phrase gradually developed into the name Vartenberk, which also appears in the archives under the historical variants Wartenberg or Vartemberk. Because of its exceptional historical and architectural value, the entire castle complex has enjoyed monument protection since 1968. Today, this structure represents a valuable testament to the transformation of a medieval fortification into a representative aristocratic residence.
