This South Bohemian castle complex was founded in the first half of the thirteenth century by Vok the First of Rožmberk. Although Český Krumlov later became the family's main seat, this place retained its significance and was continuously expanded. During the fifteenth century, enemies captured the castle twice, but the Rožmberks quickly regained it each time, and at the turn of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, they rebuilt it into a Renaissance chateau. After a change of owners during the Thirty Years' War, the dominion passed into the hands of the Buquoy family. In the nineteenth century, they gave both the Lower Chateau and the Upper Castle a romantic Neo-Gothic appearance. Today, this national cultural monument is owned by the state and attracts visitors to explore its historical interiors.
