The State Castle and Chateau of Český Krumlov is the second largest castle complex in the Czech Republic, after Prague Castle. It spreads across a rocky promontory above a meander of the Vltava River, and together with the historic centre of the town, it has been listed on the UNESCO register since 1992. The complex developed from the 13th century under the Vítkovci, Rožmberk, Eggenberg, and Schwarzenberg families, and it combines Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque styles. Among its unique features are the Baroque castle theatre with its original stage machinery and the revolving auditorium in the castle garden. The symbol of the castle is the Castle Tower with its Renaissance painted facade.
