The fortress was founded by the Rožmberk family with the permission of Charles IV in 1349 on a site where archaeological finds document settlement dating back to prehistoric times. The castle made its mark in history in 1394, when King Wenceslaus IV was briefly imprisoned here. However, as early as 1506, the Rožmberks abandoned the residence, and since 1540 it has been permanently mentioned as a ruin. Today, visitors can explore the massive remains of palaces and fortifications, which form one of the largest and best-preserved medieval monuments in the Czech Republic. Furthermore, the entire complex is set within a nature reserve, where the exposed masonry naturally blends with the protected forests.
