The original late 13th-century residence was acquired in 1335 by Zbyněk Zajíc of Valdek, who renamed it "Hare's Castle"–or Hazmburk–after his coat of arms. Thanks to its massive size, the fortress was considered impregnable and successfully resisted even Hussite sieges. Today, the site is dominated by the oval Black Tower made of dark basalt and the rectangular White Tower of light sandstone, which serves as an accessible lookout. From the late 15th century, the nobility began abandoning the castle, and it gradually fell into ruin, yet the site has retained its rugged atmosphere, enhanced by a history of massive landslides in the surrounding foothills.
