In the fertile landscape beneath Říp Mountain, in the picturesque town of Libochovice, an early Baroque chateau stands majestically, today proudly bearing the status of a National Cultural Monument. Its history is intricate; on the site of the original Gothic fortress from the 14th century, which was owned by the Zajíc of Hazmburk family, the Lobkowitz family built a Renaissance residence. However, the final, impressive architectural expression was given to the chateau by Gundakar of Dietrichstein through an extensive early Baroque reconstruction. The property remained in the possession of his descendants until the mid-19th century, when it passed by marriage to the Herberstein family. After confiscation in 1945, the chateau became state property, and today, under the administration of the National Heritage Institute, it is accessible to visitors who can admire its rich past.
