This imposing landmark rises on a steep rock high above the Dyje River in the picturesque landscape of the national park of the same name. Originally a medieval border castle, after the Thirty Years' War it underwent a magnificent transformation into a lavish Baroque residence under the direction of the noble Althann family. The famous Austrian architect Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach, who designed the monumental Ancestors' Hall and the castle chapel of the Holy Trinity, contributed to its grand reconstruction. During the tour, you can admire the richly decorated interiors that bring to life the lifestyle of the nobility in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, including the unique Vranov pottery. This significant heritage complex is today administered by the state through the National Heritage Institute and offers visitors several tour routes as well as breathtaking views of the surrounding valley.
