Originally a medieval fortress, it was transformed in the mid-16th century by the Krajíř family of Krajek into a magnificent Renaissance residence, inspired by North Italian architecture. Its present appearance began to take shape under the Streun family of Schwarzenau, who, at the end of the 16th century, added two Renaissance wings with arcades, thus creating the impressive main courtyard. The complex still includes the so-called Krajíř Old Chateau with a residential tower, and newer sections with a characteristic arcaded courtyard and an entrance prismatic tower. Over the centuries, several prominent families resided at the chateau, including the Berchtold, Heissler, and most recently, the Collalto families, who were responsible for the Baroque modifications of the interiors and maintained the chateau as their administrative and economic center until 1945. This national cultural monument, managed by the National Heritage Institute, is located in a quiet, sparsely populated part of the municipality of Uherčice and offers a unique glimpse into the noble life of past eras.
