This unmistakable landmark, towering on a rocky hill above the town, boasts a rich history dating back to the original Romanesque castle from the era of the Přemyslid dynasty. Over the centuries, the residence changed hands as well as its appearance, transforming through Gothic and Renaissance modifications under the ownership of the Liechtenstein and Dietrichstein families into a grand Baroque chateau. Although the building burned down twice over the ages, most recently at the end of the Second World War, it underwent a sensitive restoration based on the design of architect Otakar Oplatek. Today, its historic premises house the Regional Museum in Mikulov, which offers visitors engaging permanent exhibitions. In addition to tours of history and architecture, the castle grounds also come alive with major cultural events, the most famous of which is the traditional wine festival.
