Originally a 14th-century medieval castle, it acquired its present appearance during an early Baroque reconstruction following a devastating fire. In the 18th and 19th centuries, it served as an important cultural hub, hosting figures like J. W. Goethe and the composer C. W. Gluck. During the second half of the 20th century, this colossus of nearly 250 rooms was slated to be demolished for coal mining, but in 1987 it was successfully saved from destruction. Today, you can observe the ongoing restoration work and admire the rugged industrial landscape of the open-cast mine from its windows. Since 2022, the castle has proudly held the status of a national cultural monument.
