Vimperk Castle was founded in the mid-13th century as an early Gothic castle, probably by King Přemysl Otakar II. In the 17th century, it underwent an extensive Renaissance reconstruction under the direction of the Novohradští of Kolovrat. After a devastating fire in 1857, caused by a lightning strike, the castle was rebuilt by the Schwarzenbergs in a Neo-Renaissance style. In 2010, it was declared a national cultural monument, and since 2015 it has been undergoing extensive restoration under the administration of the National Heritage Institute. Visitors can choose from several tour circuits, including the Upper Castle, the Lower Castle, and the Middle Ages circuit, which presents original Gothic features such as the Vlček Tower. The tours offer a look into both restored and still unrepaired interiors with preserved Renaissance wall paintings and unique ceilings. The grounds also include the Museum of the Vimperk Region, which is dedicated to the history of the region, book printing, and glassmaking.
