At the confluence of the Otava and Volyňka rivers, a monumental fortress rises, which for centuries uniquely combined a noble residence with the spiritual power of the Order of the Knights of St. John. The dominant feature of this extensive complex is the originally Romanesque Church of Saint Prokop, harmoniously complemented by medieval Gothic sections and a later Baroque castle wing. Visitors can admire the preserved chapter hall with its cloister or climb the Gothic lookout tower Rumpál. This entire historical complex, which now houses the Museum of the Middle Pootaví Region, has been listed as a cultural monument since 1963. A walk through its courtyards thus offers a fascinating glimpse into the history of the South Bohemian region.
