The history of this impressive residence probably dates back to the first half of the thirteenth century, when it was founded by the House of Wittelsbach. After 1273, the castle passed into the hands of the Lords of Budětic and subsequently the Švihovský of Rýzmberk family, in whose possession it remained until 1549. The original small Romanesque residence underwent several phases of expansion over the centuries, the most significant of which was the Late Gothic reconstruction, which gave the castle its characteristic, albeit unfinished, fortifications. From the second half of the sixteenth century, however, the building was no longer maintained, and its destruction was sealed by plundering by troops during the Thirty Years' War. Today, this protected site, inscribed on the list of national cultural monuments in 1978, is managed by the National Heritage Institute, and visitors can explore a small museum in the reconstructed premises.
