When you climb to the wooded summit of Šumná hill, roughly three kilometers west of Klášterec nad Ohří, you will discover the mysterious stone walls of a medieval seat. This Gothic castle, rising at an altitude of around five hundred forty meters, was founded in the first half of the fifteenth century by the Lords of Šumburk. Over the years, the fortress was held in turn by, for example, the Lords of Illburk or the Fictum family. During the second half of the sixteenth century, however, the castle ceased to serve as a noble residence, began to fall into ruin, and its destruction was definitively sealed by a large fire, after which it was never rebuilt. The castle grounds also included a farm courtyard, around which the now extinct settlement of Šumná gradually grew. Since 1963, these historical remains in the Chomutov district have been protected as a cultural monument.
