The fortress was built in 1421 by the Hussite commander Jan Žižka of Trocnov as his personal residence. Thanks to its strategic location and highly modern defense against firearms for its time, the complex was never conquered during the wars. The innovative system of so-called blockhouses, made of earth, stone facing, and wooden superstructures, has been researched and consolidated since 2015 by members of the Castles of the Bohemian Central Highlands Association. Although the complex fell into ruin at the end of the 15th century, its remains have been a protected cultural monument since 1964. The top of the hill thus offers visitors not only a valuable insight into medieval military architecture but also an excellent panoramic view of the surrounding landscape.
