The fortress, founded at the turn of the Fourteenth and Fifteenth centuries, originally served an important guard role on the historic land route. During the Thirty Years' War, it was devastated by the Swedes, and after a devastating fire in 1718, it was definitively abandoned. Today, within the complex, you can explore the remains of palaces, ramparts, and gates, which ingeniously follow the triangular layout of the steep rock massif. Even Johann Wolfgang von Goethe grew fond of the raw romance of this place during his stays in the spa towns. From the highest point of the ruins, an excellent panoramic view opens up to the Slavkov Forest and the Doupov Mountains.
