The history of this noble residence in the Benešov District began at the turn of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, when an original water fortress was built on this site. During the eighteenth century, the building in the market town of Vrchotovy Janovice underwent a Rococo reconstruction, which was replaced in the mid-nineteenth century by a romantic Neo-Gothic modification of the exterior. The chateau's most famous era is personified by its last private owner, Baroness Sidonie Nádherná, an influential patron and organizer of the cultural life of that time. Today, the entire chateau complex, which includes the building itself, the adjacent park, and outbuildings, is protected as a cultural monument.
