The monumental silhouette of this medieval fortress dominates the landscape of Czech Canada from a wooded hill near Staré Město pod Landštejnem. The original Romanesque core of this watchtower castle was significantly expanded over the centuries during the late Gothic and subsequent Renaissance periods. The year 1771 proved fateful for the seat, when a fire destroyed it and the castle was subsequently abandoned. In the last third of the twentieth century, the monument underwent extensive reconstruction, but it was carried out insensitively and forever obscured some phases of its architectural development. Today, this protected cultural monument is administered by the National Heritage Institute, specifically the regional heritage office in České Budějovice.
