The history of this aristocratic residence began to be written at the end of the thirteenth century by the Lords of Velhartice. The main landmark of the castle complex is the ruin of the palace called Rajský dům (Paradise House) and the Putna residential tower, which are interconnected by a unique stone bridge. The entire residence towers on a rocky promontory above the Ostružná River in the Klatovy District. Currently, this heritage-protected site is owned by the state, managed by the National Heritage Institute, and the castle gates are open to the public. The castle has been protected as a cultural monument since 1964 and was declared a national cultural monument in 2001.
