This magnificent noble estate stands proudly on a rocky promontory, picturesquely embraced by the Doubrava River near Čáslav. The original medieval seat was built here in the thirteenth century by the Lords of Lichtenburk, and later acquired into royal possession by Charles the Fourth himself. Over the centuries, the castle faced Hussite attacks and underwent Renaissance and Baroque alterations under the patronage of prominent noble families, such as the Trčkas of Lípa and the Kaisersteins. The fairytale atmosphere you see today was imparted to the place by a radical Neo-Gothic reconstruction in the nineteenth century, initiated by its then-owners, the Auerspergs. Today, this unique national cultural monument is managed by the state, and visitors can admire it during the tourist season from spring to autumn.
