In the picturesque landscape of the Hanušovice Highlands stands the Renaissance Chateau Velké Losiny, which grew on the foundations of a medieval fortress. However, its name is inextricably linked with a dark chapter of history – the infamous witch trials, which here, between 1678 and 1696, claimed the lives of dozens of innocent people, including the priest Kryštof Lautner. These tragic events inspired Václav Kaplický to write the novel Kladivo na čarodějnice and subsequently the film of the same name by Otakar Vávra. Today, this architectural gem, declared a national cultural monument in 1995, is open to the public and managed by the National Heritage Institute. Visitors can thus explore its interiors and at the same time reflect on the turbulent past that unfolded here.
