The castle was founded by the Lords of Neuberg (Neipperg) at the beginning of the thirteenth century; it is first mentioned in writing in 1288. In 1395, Konrad von Zedtwitz acquired it through marriage to Hedvika of Neuberg, and from then on, it belonged to this extensive Cheb family for several centuries. In 1422, Emperor Sigismund granted the local Zedtwitz dominion independence from the town of Cheb, which testifies to its significance at the time. A fire in 1610 proved fatal for the castle, after which the Zedtwitz family abandoned their seat and, using stone from the ruins, built a new chateau in nearby Podhradí. From the original castle, primarily a cylindrical tower over 20 meters high has been preserved to this day, standing on a rocky promontory above the village. After years of decay, the complex has been gradually repaired since the turn of the millennium, and today it is a protected cultural monument owned by the municipality of Podhradí.
