Karlštejn Castle

This monumental Gothic castle, founded by Charles IV in 1348, served as a secure treasury for safekeeping the Imperial Coronation Jewels.

The structure, perched on a limestone promontory, culminates in the sixty-meter-high Great Tower, which hides the most precious spaces of the entire complex. Among them is the Chapel of the Holy Cross, whose walls are adorned with semi-precious stones and a unique collection of 129 panel paintings by Master Theodoric. During the tour, you will also be captivated by the Chapel of Saint Catherine, the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, or the eighty-meter-deep well, to which water was brought via an ingenious adit from the Budňany Stream. Awareness of this monument was significantly boosted by Vrchlický's comedy 'A Night at Karlštejn', yet the place itself still retains, above all, the solemn atmosphere of a medieval fortress.
